Sandra Makaka

Environmental Science Student, University of Rwanda

Sandra Makaka is a third-year Environmental Science student at the University of Rwanda who participated in a Field Experiential Learning course through Rwanda One Health University Network. Through this experience, she learned about waterborne diseases, studied human-animal interaction through water sources, and interacted with farming communities near the Akagera National Park in Northeastern Rwanda.

“Participation in the demo site activity improved my appreciation of the One Health concept through interaction with multidisciplinary colleagues. I was also able to actively engage in disease outbreak responses,” Sandra, an Environmental Science student at University of Rwanda.”

As an Environmental Science student interested in the interface of human, animal, and environmental health, Sandra learned how to move One Health concepts into practice through collaboration with community members and fellow students from diverse disciplines. She improved her problem-solving skills and understanding of the importance of community outreach and participation. Together with her fellow students, Sandra raised awareness about the danger of waterborne diseases, helped immunize livestock against Rift Valley Fever, and educated the community about the prevention and control of waterborne and chronic diseases.

“Getting rid of tsetse fly will increase our milk production and improve the health of our cows… We are happy with the students’ voluntary initiative to provide us with traps.” Jackline, a farmer in Kagyeyo area bordering Akagera National Park.”
